More than 50,000 of our military service personnel and veterans are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with serious wounds and permanent disabilities. Yet the federal government is not providing sufficient, timely, and predictable funding to treat their visible and invisible wounds of war. Our veterans stood up for us. Now it's time we stand up for them. Ask Congress to keep our national commitment to providing our veterans with the mental and physical health care they need.

Stand Up For Veterans is an initiative of the Disabled American Veterans, an organization of 1.3 million disabled veterans who are focused on building better lives for disabled veterans and their families. The initiative seeks to find public policy solutions for all veterans, particularly those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, who have incurred devastating injuries and disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological wounds of war...

BEFORE YOU GO...

Bierstock, 58, and John Melnick, 54, of Pompano Beach have written a
song "Before You Go" that salutes those who fought in WWII. It
encourages people to go out of their way to thank the aging warriors
before they die.

"If we had lost that particular war, our whole way of life would have
been shot," says Bierstock, who plays harmonica. "The WW II soldiers are
now dying at the rate of about 2,000 every day. I thought we needed to
thank them."

Bierstock and Melnick thought about shipping it off to a professional
singer, maybe a Lee Greenwood type, but because time was running out for
so many veterans, they decided it was best to release it quickly, for
free, on the Web. They've sent the song to Sen. John McCain and others
in Washington. Already they have been invited to perform it in Houston
for a Veterans Day tribute - this after just a few days on the Web. They
hope every Veteran in America gets a chance to hear it.

GOD BLESS every EVERY Veteran...and THANK YOU to those of you who may receive this!

TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30." Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.

There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft
Joe E. Lewis {the boxer}
Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.

The Escort Ride

This is a poem written by our Brother and Friend from CVI Chapter Five in Bremerton, WA....he is the Mad Poet...Mike "Poet" Carroll. It has been WBVMC's members Honor to have ridden Escorts with Brother Poet. We hope he will continue to call on us when the need arises.

This is a poem about a Memorial Escort Ride.  I am also sending this along to all my brothers who have supported some of those rides I have been blessed to participate in.  I feel it is better to be riding in the escort than to be in that long black car.  It takes a person with some character and courage to participate but I know the families really appreciate it because they have told us many times.  I told Kathy when I die I want my biker buddies to ride along on that last ride.

The Escort Ride

I’m on my way to biker heaven
To two lane roads paved with gold
My biker friends rode there before me
Through gates of pearl, so I am told

I’m on my way to biker heaven
I’ll miss my brothers, I'll miss my wife
But I must ride by that crystal river
To see the flow of the water of life

I want to see that tree that heals the nations
I want to ride where the sun don’t set
I never cared that much for cities
But this is one, they say you can’t forget

When angels come down here to get me
And I am free from this world of sin
My biker brothers will ride an escort for me
Cause Jesus knows they’ll bring me safely in
